What is Practical Legal Training?

Practical legal training (PLT) is the final step to admission as an Australian lawyer, after completing a law degree. The College of Law’s Professional Program is PLT that provides law graduates with a real-world perspective of day-to-day life as a lawyer, and the essential skills to prepare for the first day on the job.
PLT focuses on providing law graduates with a practical understanding of the key areas of legal practice, including negotiation, advocacy, civil litigation, property law, criminal practice and professional responsibility. This is achieved through instruction and mentoring from experienced and often practising lawyers.
Undertaking PLT provides law graduates with a basis for their future legal careers or roles in government, corporate, humanitarian, judicial or international arenas, and provides a solid basis for the transition from law student to practising lawyer.
‘I have found every aspect of the College most enjoyable—not only have I learnt a number of things relevant to my work, but I had a fantastic time doing it.’
James Attenborough, 2006 College graduate
‘I thoroughly enjoyed my study with The College of Law, particularly the on-site training. The Trainee Admission Program gives you more exposure to a whole range of practice areas and people, and, with that, increased knowledge and skills. As a result, once I’m admitted to practice I plan on traveling to the UK to further my career.’
Zara Milich, 2006 College graduate

For those graduates in Queensland and Victoria undertaking a Traineeship, the College provides the required supplementary training through our Trainee Admission Program (TAP).
