Reserve Bank of Australia

Only the RBA offers an all-round view of the Australian economy

The RBA Graduate Program

The Reserve Bank of Australia is a high profile organisation, respected and recognised internationally for the quality of its work. Our Graduate Development Program offers bright and intellectually curious graduates the opportunity to see the inner workings of Australia’s economy - you’ll be in a privileged and unrivalled position. Our culture also stands us apart. We constantly strive for excellence in both our thinking and execution, knowing that what we do has a direct and lasting effect of the day-to-day lives of all Australians. Monetary policy is our main responsibility. The RBA Board makes policy decisions that aim to achieve low and stable inflation. Stability of the financial system and the safety and efficiency of the payments system are also a high priority. We actively participate in the fi nancial markets, manage foreign reserves, issue currency notes, and provide select banking and registry services to Government agencies, overseas banks and institutions.

Over two years you’ll receive exceptional training and unparalleled opportunities for professional and personal growth. You will work alongside some of the world’s most talented economists and analysts who will support your development and share their knowledge.

The opportunities for graduates are broad - placements are available in our Economic, Financial Markets, Financial System, Corporate Service and Business Services divisions. The Program is tailored to your needs and is aimed at providing you with knowledge and skills to enhance your professional career.

What we look for

To be successful, you must expect to have completed a superior honours or postgraduate degree by the end of the year you apply. As a guide, you’ll need an academic rating of distinction average across the relevant majors in your degree. We are interested in a wide range of study backgrounds, including double degrees. Most areas of the Bank require a solid background in economics, some areas also look for majors in commerce and finance. Legal and accounting studies are an advantage in some areas too.

The ability to work hard and achieve results is viewed highly. So too are your technical skills, inter-personal qualities, the confi dence to communicate the quality of your thinking, plus your ability to work collaboratively and independently. Most importantly of all, however, you will need to have a demonstrable and genuine interest in the work performed by the RBA.

The RBA Cadetship Award

This Award is designed to provide work experience and fi nancial support to talented students who have the potential to be successful graduates at the RBA. Applications are accepted from third year (or the equivalent) students who are majoring in economics or finance and intend completing honours next year. We will also consider applications form students undertaking double degrees who will not complete honours studies until the following year.

Work experience begins in December and lasts for 8 weeks. Worthy candidates will then be offered a place in the Graduate Development Program commencing the following year. Financial support for the honours year is provided to cadets that accept graduate offers.
