Why did I choose AGD?
I applied for a graduate position at the Attorney-General’s Department because of the range of areas where the Department is a key policy driver, such as human rights and international law. The public service appealed to me as an alternative to the long hours of private practice.
Highlights
My first placement was in counter-terrorism strategic policy, which, although unexpected, turned out to be extremely interesting. My second rotation was assisting to develop legislative reform in extradition and mutual assistance, and my third placement has involved casework in international family law.
Some of my favourite aspects have been attending high level meetings between different Departments relating to emerging national security issues, and implementing regulations to extradite criminals. I have also made a positive impact on people’s lives directly by facilitating the return of children abducted overseas.
The Department provided the opportunity to develop and build on knowledge and skills in a range of areas such as negotiation and government processes. I have also completed my Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice and will become admitted as a solicitor at the end of the year.
The move from Newcastle to Canberra was a daunting prospect but the Department helped with the relocation. Canberra has a great lifestyle, with the capital offering cultural, sporting, musical and other activities not available elsewhere. As a graduate, you have an instant pool of friends in the same position.
