Centrelink (Engineering/Science/IT Profile)

We are one of Australia’s largest government agencies, delivering services to about a third of Australians. With over 27 000 staff across the country we assist millions of Australians, including families, retirees, people with disabilities, farmers, students and job seekers.

As one of Australia's leading IT users, and the country’s fourth largest IT network distribution, the IT Division uses cutting edge technology to provide the backbone for customer interaction. It allows Centrelink to deliver services on behalf of 31 key agencies and policy departments and distribute more than $66 billion in assistance to Australians each year.

On a typical day, Centrelink's IT Division supports: 31,800 desktops; 14 million customer records; 400 LAN servers; a network of over 22,000 users; the processing of 25 terabytes (i.e. 25 million megabytes) of knowledge data each week; and the generation of 12 million online transactions each day, with an average response time of less than three seconds and a systems availability of 99.9 per cent in business hours.  Whew…in other words – it’s big!

As part of the Centrelink National Graduate Program you will have the opportunity to participate in an extensive learning and development program, undertake two rotations within the IT Division, gain personal and professional support through our mentor program, have access to two salary advancements and be part of a great social network.

There are three main fields in our IT stream.

Infrastructure
Positions as an infrastructure graduate are focussed on ensuring the provision of a modern technical platform and capability for service delivery, allowing the rest of Centrelink to function efficiently.

Business Analysts
Working hand-in-hand with Centrelink business and policy teams, the Business Analysts use their IT knowledge and skills to determine how to integrate new initiatives into existing systems.  They translate business requirements into systems solutions.

Technical Programmer
Centrelink technicians consistently utilise emerging technologies to further improve IT services.  Working as a technical programmer means being at the business end of the keyboard, programming to move Centrelink into the future.
