I had two and a half years’ postgraduate experience when I joined ASIO as a legal officer, and I have been extremely pleased with my decision since day one. The legal work that I’m involved in is both varied and challenging, and the professionalism and integrity within the Organisation is excellent.

I was a little anxious about how quickly I would adopt the security practices of the Organisation, but the transition was very smooth because of the strong support provided by my colleagues. My supervisor and other principal lawyers are approachable and happy to assist wherever possible, and this has had a positive impact in making the transition to a security sensitive workplace.

As a lawyer in ASIO I work closely with other government agencies, law enforcement bodies and a few private sector companies. Some of the advice work I’m involved in is on some of the most significant legal issues facing Australia, and it’s very rewarding to see that advice being applied operationally within the Organisation.

I’ve also been very impressed by the Organisation’s investment into the professional development of individuals.

I have participated in training courses presented by acclaimed university professors and field experts, and management strongly encourages participation in continuing legal education courses.
