How to apply for public sector roles

Government agencies and departments have complex and lengthy application processes. It’s important that you get all the available information about the role you’re applying for and the department offering the job. Make sure you follow all instructions. Most information should be available on the department/agency website, and you should be able to download an application package and apply online. If you are unsure at any stage in the application process, speak to the nominated contact for clarification.

Selection criteria

Applicants for public service positions usually need to provide a statement addressing a number of selection criteria as part of their application. It is critically important that you provide a statement covering all selection criteria as your application will not be considered without it.

Selection criteria are typically divided into essential and desirable criteria. Ideally, you should meet all of the essential criteria in order to be seriously considered for the role. Your chances of being short-listed for the position are greatly increased if you also satisfy the desirable criteria.

Common examples of selection criteria:

  • verbal and written communication skills
  • organisational skills
  • ability to work as part of a team
  • flexibility and adaptability
  • attention to detail
  • computer skills
  • interpersonal communication skills.

Make sure you address each selection criterion and clearly outline how you believe you satisfy it. Use evidence and examples from your personal experience.

You may find it useful to apply the STAR model of addressing selection criteria:

Situation — provide a brief outline of the situation or setting.

Task — outline what you did.

Approach or action — outline how you did it.

Result — describe the outcome(s).

It is important to present your selection criteria clearly so that the selection panel can easily find the information they are looking for. Be careful to label each criterion with the same wording as presented on the application form, and it is a good idea to address each criterion in the same order that they are listed on the application form.
