Working in the ACT

Many of the federal government agencies are located in Canberra or require graduates to complete a required period of training there. For graduates from outside Canberra who choose to relocate, the city has a great deal to offer.

With a population of around 325,000 people, Canberra has all the facilities and services of capital city, but none of the hassles. You won’t find it hard to meet people as many graduates flock to the city each year, most of them keen to make friends as they are without the social networks and family support of home.

The city hosts sporting events, festivals and special events like the Summernats car festival and Floriade spring festival. Premier cultural attractions like the War Memorial, the National Museum and the National Gallery also host a range of special exhibitions during the year.
There are plenty of bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants in the city, and Thredbo, Jindabyne, the New South Wales coastline and Sydney are all an easy drive away, perfect for long weekends.

Relocating to Canberra

All government departments provide orientation programs and assistance in finding rental accommodation. Some organisations provide a moving allowance and some even have familiarisation days, where graduates come to Canberra and get acquainted with their workplace and the city before relocating.

Social Network of Graduates (SNoG)

The Social Network of Graduates (SNoG) connects graduates in public service, particularly those new to Canberra, through social activities and events such as ski weekends, weekly sporting activities, balls and much more. For more information, visit www.snog.orac.net.au
